Fleeman’s U-Pick Blueberry farm has been a “labor of love” and a determination to make “lemonade out of lemons”. When a 4-lane state highway was constructed through the property, the land could no longer be used as before. Owners, John and Brenda Fleeman began researching possible ideas for land use and the idea of Fleeman’s U-Pick Blueberries was born. All work, which included preparing the land, irrigation system, planting, etc. was completed by the owners with advice from the local county extension agent and a helpful fellow blueberry grower from a neighboring county. The first bushes were planted in December of 1998. The weather was generally cooperative but since the daylight hours were short some of the young bushes were planted by the light of a full moon. Then the weather took a turn for the worse and the last few bushes were planted during a heavy sleet.
The farm began with 1000 plants and five varieties. They span the growing season and produce early as well as late berries. Three new varieties were added in the spring of 2010, making a total of 8 varieties.
The picking season usually runs from mid-June thru early August. Many customers return year after year, and this seems almost like a family reunion. We look forward to seeing these “old friends” and enjoy spending time with them as well as getting to know new customers. We have had visitors from many of our states and numerous foreign countries. If you have never been to our farm, we hope you will do so soon and become part of our “family.”
